I'm watching modern era Doctor Who (2005-present) for the second time. Doctor Who is a TV series that is dear to me but at the same time somewhat uneven so for the benefit of future me and hopefully others I'm writing a short episode guide this rewatch.
I try to avoid spoilers as far as possible except when needed to justify my verdict or when spoiler warnings are well past their due date, such which episodes have the Doctor reincarnate. Double episodes are combined into one review.
1 The Next Doctor - Ok
Oh no, it's the Cybermen again and now they have Cyberdogs or cats or whatever. However, it's all right because the Cybermen are not the main focus of this episode. It's a historic episode about the people of London, another man who is also the Doctor and a plain human villain. It's not great but it turns out as an okay story in the end.
2 Planet of the Dead - Skip
Probably the least memorable Doctor Who episode to date. It's been a week since I watched it as I'm writing this and I've already forgotten it. There was something about a bus and a wormhole and a bunch of terrible actors playing temporary sidekicks?
3 The Waters of Mars - Watch
I'm not a fan of the main plot device -- The Flood. Everything else in the episode is great though. It's got fixed points in time, nice sidekicks, all the feels and some Doctor character building. In particular it shows the Doctor progressively going off the rails when he has no companion to temper him.
4-5 The End of Time - Ok
It starts out pretty strong with the Master being his evil self. Then it all falls apart as soon as the Lord Time Lord senior and his henchmen appears. Apparently they weren't so forever locked away after all when it suited the plot. They enter the stage and there is much talking while the Master, normally the world's greatest narcissist, bows down in awe and is mostly passive for the rest of the episode.
Only worth watching because it's where the tenth Doctor leaves with a bang and hands it over to the eleventh Doctor.
